Brett Dean's latest album is a collection of works derived from and composed for Dean's opera based on Hamlet, which premiered in 2017.And I Have Played Ophelia," for soprano and string orchestra, focuses on the often misunderstood character of Ophelia. Elsinore's Room" for viola and piano is Dean's own composition. This work for viola and piano depicts a drone flying over Helsingr Castle, the setting of the play, and moving from room to room. Gertrude's Fragments," for mezzo-soprano and guitar, is reminiscent of songs with lute from the same period as Shakespeare. The music expresses the complex emotions of Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. The "Confessio" for bass clarinet solo expresses Hamlet's remorseful uncle Claudius' monologue and explores the possibilities of this instrument. The final concerto for accordion and small orchestra, "The Players," recreates scenes from the performers in the first act of Dean's opera. This most iconic literary masterpiece is presented here with Dean's engaging music.(King International)
